Karachi: 2 accused of looting, rioting remanded to police
KARACHI: Administrative Judge for Anti Terrorism Courts (ATCs), Karachi division, Justice Khawaja Naveed Ahmed remanded on Tuesday two young boys who had been arrested on charges of arson, loot and damage to public and private property to the custody of Saddar Police till January 5.
Accused Waqar and Zaheer had earlier been produced by the police before the AJ, seeking physical remand till January 12. They were booked in FIR 201/07 under section 147, 149, 435 and 427 of Cr.P.C. Some 100 to 150 unidentified accused were shown as absconders.
The police claimed that the accused in custody were among a mob that burnt a dozen vehicles near Central Stores Deport (CSD), Kalapul, on December 27 when miscreants took to streets of the city and torched hundreds of vehicles in just a few hours in reaction to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
In the remand papers, the police submitted that the accused were taken into custody on December 29 and were “subjected to tactful interrogation during which they disclosed their involvement” in burning vehicles. Their physical remand is required for identification parade and interrogation, leading to arrest of the absconding accused.
The AJ, after perusing the papers, remanded both the accused to custody of the investigators. This could be the first case of terrorism against people involved in arson, loot, burning of vehicles and spreading terror in Karachi since December 27.
