‘Gunfire at PPP rally in Karachi, one hurt’
KARACHI: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) election rally here, wounding one person, police said on Monday. Angry PPP supporters hurled stones at police and private vehicles after the incident in the southern port city of Karachi, they said.
“Two unidentified men riding a motorcycle opened fire on the rally and disappeared from the scene” in Lyari, a pro–Benazir Bhutto slum in Karachi, police official Muhammad Parvaiz told AFP. The elections were postponed by six weeks after Benazir was killed in a gun-and-bomb attack on a political rally in Rawalpindi on December 27. Campaigning has been almost non-existent since then but the PPP has said it will start electioneering after the end of the official 40-day mourning period for Benazir on Thursday.
