Karachi: PPP supporter injured in Monday’s shooting dies
KARACHI: An activist of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) died in hospital on Tuesday, a day after he was injured in a shooting at an election meeting, police said. Unidentified gunmen opened fire on Monday at PPP workers as they gathered to campaign for the elections in Karachi.
“Twenty-two-year-old PPP worker Asif Ghanchi, who was injured in yesterday’s firing, died in hospital today. He was shot in the chest,” police official Mohammad Pervez told AFP. The shooting in the staunchly pro-PPP slum area of Lyari was one of the first such incidents this year in what has so far been an unusually quiet election campaign in Pakistan. The polls were postponed by six weeks after former Pakistani prime minister and PPP chairwoman Benazir Bhutto was killed in a gun and suicide bomb attack on a political rally in Rawalpindi on December 27. Her party will start electioneering after the end of the official 40-day mourning period on Thursday.
