Karachi: Two die, seven injured in MQM-PPP clashes
KARACHI: A nine-year-old girl and a man, now being claimed to be a political worker by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), died, while a policeman and three activists of the MQM and PPP sustained bullet wounds during Tuesday’s election celebrations in Saddar Town.
Life came to a halt in Ranchore Line, Garden, Burns Road and surrounding areas when the PPP and MQM activists clashed with each other Tuesday evening at Huti market Ranchore Line within the jurisdiction of the Nabi Bux police station.
“A PPP sector office had been set up and the activists were celebrating. However MQM workers were also present and suddenly a strict dialogue was exchanged between them and the party activists opened fire,” Saddar Town SP Captain Tahir Naveed said.
According to Naveed the clash resulted in injuries to nine-year old Maryam and four to five men including party workers. Maryam and another injured, Muhammad Ali, passed away at the CHK Tuesday evening. Naveed claimed that the fight started again as there was confusion whether the injured activists belong to MQM or PPP. According to SHO Zakir Goga when the police reached the scene the entrance was blocked while the firing continued on both sides. “The police opened fire to gain entry. However the police tried to gain control of the situation,” he said.
MQM activist Kamran also sustained bullet wounds when a rally was being carried out Tuesday by the MQM at Natha Khan Goth within the jurisdiction of the Shah Faisal Colony police station. “I cannot say anything yet about where the bullet was fired from because the area is dominated by PPP, PML-N and MQM,” DSP Sohail Faiz said.
