Karachi: ASI confesses to involvement in police officer murder case
KARACHI: The murder case of Mohammed Anwar, 38, a policeman shot dead with his own gun, has been solved. Assistant Sub-Inspector Nasir Hayat confessed to hiding knowledge of the real killers from the police during interrogations. A police party has been sent to Faisalabad to arrest the killers.
Anwar was shot five times with his own sub-machine gun while on duty at his police post in Bhains Colony, within the jurisdiction of the Korangi Industrial Area Police Station.
“We suspected ASI Hayat but wanted to solve the case completely before suspending or arresting him. If we had taken action against him, he and his accomplices would have fled,” said Landhi Town Acting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Farrukh Bashir, adding that initial investigations revealed that the murder was for financial gains.
Zafar Iqbal, the investigation officer of the case, said that Hayat was known for his loose character and had two personal bodyguards, Farhan and Faisal. “ASI Hayat initially claimed innocence, but after some pressure, confessed to being involved,” he claimed.
According to Hayat’s statement, he was not present at the time of the murder. After the incident, Farhan, his personal bodyguard, and a police constable named Umer Hayat came to his house to inform him about the shooting.
Hayat claimed they were under the influence of alcohol and had accidentally killed Anwar. “They came to me for help and informed me that they were going to their hometown of Faisalabad,” said Hayat in his statement.
The ASI added that the two were his close associates and, therefore, he held back information from the police and registered FIR number 5008 against unknown assailants.
ASP Bashir said that the ASI has not been arrested or suspended yet because they are going to catch the killers first. “After that we will register a murder FIR against them,” he said.
