Lahore: Killers of SSP activist still at large
LAHORE: Mughalpura Police have been unable to arrest the killers of Muslim Butt, an activist of defunct militant organisation, Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), after the passing of 23 days. The police also know the number plate of the car used by the killers.
Butt had served a sentence of seven years for being involved in sectarian killings. He had been released about 21 months before he was killed on February 8.
Police sources said the car used by the killers had been rented. The car had been issued to a person called Ashraf, alias Achu. The police, however, have been unable to arrest Ashraf, sources said, adding that Muslim had been killed by the assailants over a minor issue.
Ijaz Ahmad Kamboh, Mughalpura Police in charge of investigation, said several raids had been conducted to arrest Ashraf, but so far no raid had been successful. “We are working on the issue and the killers will soon be arrested,” he added.
Awais Malik, Mughalpura circle deputy superintendent of police, confirmed that the car used by the killers had been rented from Mughalpura under the name of Ashraf, alias Achu. “Investigations have revealed that Ashraf and Khurram Butt had killed Muslim. Ashraf is the right hand man of Shahid Khan, who had a property dispute with Muslim. The quarrel arose because Shahid and Muslim had been involved in landgrabbing. Two days before the murder, they had exchanged harsh words in a panchayat (arbitrary council),” he said.
