Karachi: 100% increase in killings
KARACHI: According to an Aaj Kal survey there has been a 100 percent increase in the mortality rate in Karachi. A major contributor to the increased statistics is the ongoing gang war and target killings in Lyari.
About 233 people have been killed in the last two months. On the contrary, there were 98 reported mortalities during the first two months of 2007. Over 240 murder attempts have been reported in the last 70 days while the bimonthly statistics for the year 2007 were 112. The gang war between the Rehman Dakait and Arshad Pappu groups has increased these statistics.
Around 24 people have been executed in the Lyari gang war and an increase was observed after the polls as Rehman started a ‘clean sweep’ war against Pappu. Residents of Lyari were killed during a clash between Jabbar Jhingo, the right hand of Rehman and Ghaffar Zakri of Pappu. Khuda Bux alias Paidra a close companion of Papu was killed during the clash as well. The PPP and ANP have been targeted the most. Site police station, Sachal police station, Zaman Town police station and four other police stations of Lyari-Kalri, Baghdadi, Chakiwara and Kalakot are chart toppers with the most number of cases reported.
