Lahore: Police kill six in ‘shootout’
LAHORE: The police on Saturday gunned down six members of an inter-district gang in a ‘shootout’ in the Iqbal Town police precinct.
The police said the robbers had snatched a motorcycle (LEL-6433) from a man at Bekhewal Mor. The police said the robbers had also robbed Nasir Majeed’s family, which was returning from a wedding. The robbers had deprived the family of gold ornaments, Rs 20,000, a mobile phone and their car (LEA-2991). Later, the robbers fled towards Asif block (Iqbal Town).
Iqbal Town Station House Officer (SHO) Rashid Ameen Butt along with a police team reached the scene. The SHO also informed the requisite patrolling parties. When a police party chased the robbers, they fired at the police. Later, the robbers entered Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park and fired at the police to which the police retaliated. Later, when the police party entered the park, they found the robbers dead. No police official was injured in the ‘encounter’.
The police party sent the bodies to the city morgue for an autopsy and recovered the stolen goods from the scene.
The police said the robbers were members of Waseem Gang. The robbers were wanted by the police in 61 cases, including murder and robbery across the province. The robbers were identified as Waseem alias Baba (Sialkot), Waheed Murad (Sialkot), Nadeem (Sialkot), Faisal (Gowalmandi), Yasir Khan (Iqbal Town) and Ghaffar (Sialkot).
However, a police official alleged that the robbers had been arrested a couple of weeks ago. On the directions of high-ups, they were killed in a ‘staged encounter’ under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police Mukhtar Shah.
Aisha, a resident of WAPDA flats, said she was praying when she heard bullet shots a few yards away from her house. She said that police officials were firing in the air after brief intervals. Later, she saw the police officials remove the bodies from the park.
