33 booked, seven held over ‘vani’ in Burewala
BUREWALA: Police in Babrianwala have registered a case against 33 people and arrested seven for their alleged involvement in marrying a nine-year-old to the son of a landlord in ‘vani’.
The family of Nazia, the victim of the conservative ‘vani’ custom, told a press conference recently that Muhammad Yar, alias Nawaz, had forcibly married Nazia to his son Khalid after Rab Nawaz, Nazia’s father, married Khalid’s daughter.
Those who were arrested include members of the panchayat (a village council) that had ordered Nazia’s marriage with Khalid, Muhammad Yasin, the brother of Khalid, Muhammad Yar, Muhammad Iqbal, Bashir Ahmad Khokhar, and Ahmad Bakhsh. “We have been falsely implicated in a vani case,” Muhammad Yar told reporters.
