Lahore: Police arrests 494 criminals in biggest one-night raid
LAHORE: The city police arrested 494 people late on Saturday night, including 131 proclaimed offenders, 114 court absconders, and 149 target offenders, in what they claim was the city’s largest ever one-night crackdown on criminals. Police teams also confiscated a large number of unlicensed weapons and narcotics from those arrested.
Talking to Daily Times, police officials said the crackdown was conducted after Inspector General Azhar Nadeem Syed received a letter from the Interior Ministry citing intelligence reports that said terrorists could be using the narcotics business to fund terrorist activities.
Fifteen teams were constituted, headed by the superintendents (SPs) of the operations and investigation wings; the Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA); and the Criminal Record Office (CRO). The teams raided a number of criminals’ hideouts and arrested them. The teams arrested 494 people and seized 279 pistols, 11 guns, five shotguns, 812 bullets, more than two kilogrammes of charas, 220 grammes of heroine, and 19 bottles of liquor.
No big names on list of arrested Senior police officials, requesting anonymity, said that the crackdown was the largest ever conducted in the city, but lacked big names that should have been on the list of those arrested.
Perhaps the only famous names on the list were those of five members of Bhola Dacoit Gang, arrested by the Saddar Division police. The police also seized Rs 200,000 in cash, more than 80 g (eight tolas) of gold ornaments, a motorcycle, and seven cellphones from them.
