Larkana: Unar arrested in firing case
LARKANA: Former provincial minister and PML-Q Larkana Chapter President Haji Altaf Hussain Unar was arrested from his residence at Ali Abad near Larkana in a tense atmosphere on Tuesday. During his arrest, hundreds of PML–Q activists took to the streets, burned tires, and blocked the roads to protest against his arrest, whereas three people also tried to self- immolate.
According to details, a heavy contingent of police comprising around 15 police mobiles surrounded the house of Haji Altaf Hussain Unar at Ali Abad, taluka Bakrani, to arrest him in a case involving firing at the residence of Azra Peechoho in Nawabshah during the by-election of 2006.
The FIR of this case was registered at Budapur Jamshoro Police Station, against Haji Altaf Hussain Unar, Malik Changez Khan, Dr Sohrab Sarki, Ghulam Ali Khoso and Misri Khoso. This FIR was later sealed but now a new FIR no 30/08 was registered against them at the same police station.
In this regard, the Larkana police under the aegis of DSP Jan Muhammad Mugheri surrounded the former minister’s house in the morning. On hearing this news, hundreds of Unar’s supporters arrived at the spot, staged a protest demonstration and tried to obstruct his arrest.
After facing stiff resistance from the protesters, the police finally managed to take Unar away after he appealed to the protesters not to take the law into their hands.
He was arrested at around 4:45 pm after which he was rushed to Larkana, and handed over to Jamshoro police.
Three of the protesters Irshad Areejo, Gada Hussain Unar and Amun Memon also tried to self-immolate, but they were rescued and rushed to the hospital.
The people of the villages Hatri, Ali Abad, Brohi and others closed down their shops in protest, while many demonstrators burned tyres at Air Port road in Larkana and blocked the highway for many hours.
While the police was taking him away, Unar told journalists that he was going to contest the upcoming by-election on NA-207 against PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, therefore he has been arrested and false cases have been registered against him.
