Lahore: Police change facts of gang rape case’
LAHORE: The police, while registering the rape case of a 15-year-old girl, changed the place of the incident to save the reputation of a hotel owned by some influential people, sources in the Police Department told Daily Times on Monday.
Salma Rizwan, the victim, told the police that her friend, Kanwal, had come to her house to take permission from her (Salma’s) parents to take her to attend her (Kanwal’s) sister’s engagement ceremony in Malik Park, next to Data Darbar.
She said that her parents had given her permission and that she left with Kanwal. She said that as they got to the main road, two men – Naveed and Shahnawaz – approached in a car. She said that Kanwal got into the car, as she knew the men and convinced her (Salma) to get in too.
She said the men stopped the car after about a five-minute drive and dropped off Kanwal. She said the men then took her to a hotel in Ghalib Market, raped her, drove her to Sabzazar and threw her out of the car.
Salma was rushed to Jinnah Hospital. Nawankot police Assistant Sub-inspector Tufail asked the girl for written statement after which she described the whole happening with her.
The victim in her written complaint, which she provided to ASI Tuffail, told the police about a local hotel in the Ghalib Market police Area, where accused Nadeem and Shahnawaz took her. The Nawankot Police after receiving the complaint informed the Ghalib Market police, following which an official from Ghalib Market reached there.
According to police sources, the Ghalib Market police did not register the case in order to protect the name of the hotel. The sources said the hotel mentioned by the victim in her complaint was owned by some influential people of the city. They said that the girl was later sent to the General Hospital to get a medico-legal certificate, which confirmed the rape incident.
Tufial said that the girl had told the police everything about the incident, but the police were still not confirmed where the incident took place. He said that he and a police official, whose name he had forgotten, had agreed that there were two hotels with the same name in Ghalib Market and the Civil Lines. He said that they had realised finally that the incident took place in the Civil Lines police station area.
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Waris, who reached the scene and completed initial interrogation late on Saturday night, said the case had been registered with the Civil Lines police because the incident took place in their area. He, however, said that ASI Zafar from Ghalib Market Police also reached the scene in order to clear the matter.
Muharrar Ghalib Market Police on the issue said that they did not have any idea about the happening. He said that no one was working with them with the name Zafar. He said that he did not know who visited the crime scene.
The investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Shafi Lashari, on the issue said that the police had investigated the matter and arrested the accused, except Shahnawaz who was still at large. He said that he was not aware about the jurisdiction clash while registering the case, as this was not his matter. He said that when he interrogated Kanwal, she had alleged that the two young men were interested in Salma rather than in her and that was why they left her and took Salma along with them.
