Lahore: Cops kills youth and arrests two others
LAHORE: The police killed a youth and arrested two of his friends for not stopping at a police picket in the Wahdat Colony police precinct in the wee hours on Wednesday.
Locals said that the friends, identified as Imran, Muhammad Naveed, a resident of Gujrat, and Muhammad Iqbal, a resident of Bahawalpur, crossed a police picket on a motorcycle and the police told them to stop. They said that the motorcyclists tried to run, but some locals caught them and handed them over to the policemen.
They said that one of the three policemen, Amir Riaz, abused and thrashed the youngsters in the presence of the locals. An eyewitness said that Riaz slapped Imran, who also retaliated. “The policeman then shot Imran in the head,” the eyewitness said, adding that the injured was rushed to the Lahore General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
However, the police have failed to establish any links of the youngsters with criminals during the initial investigations. Wahdat Colony Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rana Azeem claimed that Mohafiz Squad personnel tried to stop the three suspects at a police picket near Rehmanpura.
He said that the suspects ignored the police signal and tried to flee. He said that the policemen chased them and one of the suspects fired at the policemen, which was retaliated. To a query, he said that the youngsters did not have a criminal record, but investigations were underway.
