23 people escape from FIA custody in Karachi
LAHORE: Twenty-three deportees escaped on Tuesday from the custody of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) anti-human trafficking unit in Karachi, Dawn News TV reported. FIA officials confirmed the incident, it added. A high-level inquiry had been ordered into the incident, said the channel.
On Tuesday the FIA arrested 252 people under the Passport Act and human trafficking laws. According to the channel, after filing cases against the accused, 84 of them were sent to jail and the remaining 168 were held in the FIA detention cell in the Saddar area of Karachi. The deportees were being interrogated when some of them managed to escape, the channel quoted FIA officials as saying, adding that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the security breach.
