Lahore: Policeman, robber injured in shootout
LAHORE: A police constable and a robber were injured in a shootout between Ghalib Market police and a group of robbers on Guru Mangat Road on Thursday. A police official said that the police were tipped-off about a group of five robbers breaking into a house on Guru Mangat Road and holding the residents at gunpoint.
He said a police contingent from four stations rushed to the location and surrounded the house and locality. “The robbers were asked through a loudspeaker to surrender without resistance. They were also informed about the contingent deployed to arrest them,” he said.
Sub-Inspector Shahzad Ahmad said that the robbers ignored the warning and opened indiscriminate fire on the policemen who tried to enter the house. “As a result, one of the policemen, Ibrar Hussain, was injured. The police then retaliated and three of the robbers ultimately surrendered. One was injured and one managed to escape. The injured was indentified as Tanveer Ahmad,” he said.
Witness According to witness Javed, three robbers were trying to rob a motorist on Guru Mangat near Chowki Ghalib Market when a police official saw them and ordered them to drop their weapons. “In the meanwhile, policemen from the chowki also reached the location after which robbers opened fire on the policemen. Due to their firing, one of the policemen was injured. The police then retaliated after which one of the robbers surrendered, one was injured and the third robber escaped from the scene on a motorbike. The injured robber also tried to escape and entered the house of tailor Shahid from where police arrested him later,” he said, adding that the police arrested one passer-by and a cart vendor, Akram, on unclear grounds of suspicion.
Shahid said “We were sitting in our living room when the door opened and a young man entered. He was bleeding and holding a pistol. I asked him to drop the pistol and lay down on the bed. I had just said this when policemen forced into my house and arrested him.”
