Karachi: Police grab 4 citizens with vigilante zeal
Karachi: The police arrested on Monday four alleged robbers and four people who allegedly forced others to burn robbers in separate recent incidents in the city. Two alleged robbers, Yasir and Riasat, were caught trying to escape after robbing the house of Mohammad Iqbal in Sector 11½, Raja Tanvir Colony, Orangi Town, within the jurisdiction of the Pakistan Bazaar Police Station. A number of people gathered after they heard Iqbal scream.
People surrounded the men and started beating Yasir while Riasat managed to evade the crowd, but was caught by the police. There were reports that the crowd sprinkled some oil on Yasir and one man lit a match to burn him, but fortunately for Yasir, only his clothes got burnt as the police arrived in time to save him.
However, DSP Abdul Rasheed Khan denied this, saying that while there were some individuals who were trying to coerce the crowd into burning the robbers, the robbers were not actually set on fire. The police arrested both robbers and the four who wanted to burn the robber. Similarly, the Garden police arrested two alleged dacoits named Abdul Karim and Saddam Hussain, and claimed to have recovered two guns from their possession. These men were arrested from Siddiq Wahab Road, Usmanabad, when they were trying to flee after robbing a mobile phone from a man named Maqsood Ahmed.
There were also reports that these men were tortured after being caught by citizens, who tried to burn them. However, DIG South Iqbal Mehmood denied this and said that the police arrested them and there was no interference from the local masses.
