The last ride: Police kills robber 10 minutes after he stole a jeep
LAHORE: Gulberg Police claimed to have killed a 25-year old robber in a ‘shootout’ with the police on Gurmani Road on Tuesday morning. According to the official record, the entire event took place in just 10 minutes. The record stated that the alleged robber and his accomplice snatched a jeep from a man at around 4:15am in front of Gulab Devi Hospital, main Ferozepur Road.
The police tried to stop them at Liberty Roundabout and chased them all the way to Jail Road, where the alleged criminals turned along the drain in front of Akram Complex.
Here, the police opened fire on them, and the two men left the vehicle with a busted tyre on Gurmani Road (link road to Gulberg Main Boulevard). “The alleged criminals shot at the policemen, who fired back and killed one of them at 4:25am, while the other man fled. The Ghalib Market police registered the case at 4:35am,” Ghalib Market Police Station Moharrar Khalil quoted the Gulberg station house officer (SHO) as saying.
He said that the stolen jeep, bearing registration number LW-750, belonged to Munir Ahmad, a resident of Burki. He said that a police team headed by Gulberg SHO Faisal Sharif, Sub-Inspector Ali Akbar, Assistant Sub-Inspector Tamraiz, and four constables took part in the shootout. He said that the police also recovered a 9mm pistol and three mobile phones from the robber.
SHO Faisal Sharif was not available to comment. Gulberg Police Station Moharrar Muhammad Yaqoob said that the robber had been identified as Imran, a resident of Islampura. The moharrar claimed that Imran had shot injured Lt Col Riaz of 10-Division in Cavalry Grounds. He said that the colonel died on May 18 at Combined Military Hospital (CMH). He said that the police believed Imran to be the murderer because Lt Col Riaz had been shot with a 9mm pistol.
