Peshawar: Pro-govt militant commander gunned down
PESHAWAR: Unidentified men gunned down pro-government militant commander Khanan Khan and his bodyguard Rafiullah in Frontier Region (FR) area of Dera Ismail Khan district on Sunday, officials said. DI Khan District Police Officer (DPO) Abdul Ghaffar Qaiserani told Daily Times over the phone that Khanan Khan, commander of the pro-government Maulvi Nazir faction was killed in Dara Zandah area of FR DI Khan.
“The attack left Khanan Khan and his fellow Rafiullah dead, while another fellow sustained injuries in the incident, however, his condition is stable,” he said. Khanan had sided with the government last year when it launched an operation to cleanse Uzbek militants from the South Waziristan Agency. Khanan was against the presence of Uzbek militants in the area and had played a crucial role of assisting the military to evict them from Wana. Khan had already been the target of a few failed assassination bids. He had escaped an attack on his office in Shakai area earlier this year in which five people had been killed and five others were injured.
