Lahore: 975 gangsters arrested, Rs 336.4m recovered in 2008
LAHORE: The police disbanded 302 gangs, arrested 975 if their members and recovered property worth Rs 336.4 million during the first five months of 2008. As many as 6,340 court absconders and proclaimed offenders have also been arrested during this period, an official statement issued on Wednesday said. The statement said the arrested men confessed to 2,481 incidents of crime including seven robbery-cum-murders, 13 murders, 686 robberies and 1,236 cases of street crime.
It said recovered property included Rs 6.26 million in cash, four kg gold, 66 cars, 140 motorcycles, 667 mobile phones, 10 pickup trucks and a tractor. It added that the police also arrested 3,498 proclaimed offenders out of which 191 were involved in murder cases, 148 in attempted murder cases, 197 in robbery cases, 369 in burglary and 2,593 in other miscellaneous cases.
During the campaign against possession of illegal weapons, 5,297 cases had been registered and 5,301 accused were arrested. The police seized six Kalashnikov rifles, 188 rifles, 284 weapons, 4,554 pistols and revolvers, 25 carbines, 47 mousers, four bombs, 22 daggers, a hand grenade and 24,000 bullets from the arrested.
The police also arrested 4,125 drug dealers and seized 18kg heroin, 1,610kg charas, 22kg opium and 10,601 bottles of liquor. The police also arrested 1,473 gamblers and seized more than Rs 3.24 million from them.
