Bara: Seized drugs set on fire
BARA: Khyber Agency Political Administration on Thursday destroyed seized drugs worth millions of rupees at a drug burning ceremony held in connection with International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Shakas area of Jamrud tehsil.
NWFP Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani was the chief guest on the occasion. A large number of dignitaries including Khyber Agency Political Agent (PA) Tariq Hayat Khan, Bara Assistant Political Agency (APA) Khalid Mumtaz Kundi, Jamrud APA Rasool Khan, officers of Narcotics Customs and Frontier Corps (FC) and tribal elders attended the ceremony.
Addressing on the occasion, NWFP governor said five years ago the government had destroyed poppy crop cultivated on 10,000 acres of land in Balochistan province. He added that in NWFP and FATA the government reduced poppy cultivation from 28,000 acres to 4,000 acres of land through effective operations. The governor said in neighboring country Afghanistan poppy cultivation had increased from 38,000 acres to 400,000 acres. He said the world’s demand for heroin was fulfilled from Afghanistan. Later, Ghani set on fire the drugs seized in the agency that included 142 kg heroin, 1225 kg charas, 26 kg opium and others kinds of drugs
