Islamabad: SC acquits Sherpao in Ring Road scam
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday acquitted former interior minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao of a Ring Road land acquisition scam under the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), dismissing the last appeal by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The NRO provides amnesty to public office-holders charged in corruption cases between 1986 and 1999. A three-member SC bench consisting of Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, Justice Ejaz Yousaf and Justice Sheikh Hakim Ali was hearing an appeal by the NAB against the Peshawar High Court’s acquittal of Sherpao and others in the Ring Road land acquisition scam.
The SC on Wednesday dismissed three out of four NAB appeals against the high court verdict of acquitting Sherpao in three accountability references, which were filed against him on charges of illegally allotting plots in Hayatabad Township, Peshawar.
The court had also directed the NAB authorities to submit a complete record of the reference regarding the Ring Road scam. On Thursday, the court dismissed NAB’s last appeal after hearing the NAB deputy prosecutor general’s arguments and upheld the high court’s decision.
