Lahore: 30 arrested for selling SIMs illegally
LAHORE: The City District Government Lahore (CDGL) on Thursday arrested 30 shopkeepers for selling mobile phone subscriber identity modules (SIMs) illegally. A CDGL official said the district government had started a campaign against people who were selling SIMs without the permission of authorities concerned.
He said seven shopkeepers were held for selling SIMs illegally on Wednesday night. He said cases had been registered against them under Section 31 of the Pakistan Telecommunication Reorganisation Act 1996. He said the government had started the campaign keeping in view security concerns. Staff Officer to DCO Tariq Zaman confirmed the campaign had been launched.
The Senate Standing Committee on Telecommunication Affairs had set May 22 deadline to block all unregistered SIMs. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked more than 2 million SIMs so far. The PTA has directed mobile-phone companies to collect users’ complete data. The PTA also asked all franchises and sale points to attach a copy of customer’s CNIC, two references and a utility bill.
