Karachi: Police save man from death by angry mob
KARACHI: Residents of Ittehad Town tried to kill the man for blasphemy within the jurisdiction of Baldia Police Station. Munawar Baba, son of Rehmat Ali, is the resident of Ittehad Town and is a faith healer by profession. He was arrested by the police when scores of residents of the area were trying to kill him for what they described as blasphemous acts. The crowd was angry beyond reason and was bent on killing him. They had already beaten him very badly when the police arrived on the scene after receiving information from civilians.
The mob was not willing to hand him over to the police and in the struggle to rescue Baba, some policemen also sustained injuries. The crowd chanted slogans against Baba’s blasphemy and when the police hauled him away to the police station, scores of people followed and demanded that the police hand him over to them. However, with the help of respected persons of the area, the police managed to disperse the crowd and registered FIR No. 395-B on behalf of the government.
It is pertinent to mention here that a Hindu man, who used to work at a local factory in Korangi, was killed by his colleagues for allegedly blasphemous statements, a fact which was disputed by human rights groups.
