Lahore: 8 ‘pickpockets’ including four cops arrested
LAHORE: Chuhng Police claimed to have arrested eight people, including four policemen, accused of being members of a pickpocket gang on late Saturday night. However, the police registered a case against five people, including two policemen. Police sources said the eight accused, including three uniformed policemen, were caught red-handed by the public and staff of a private bus stand in Chuhng, beaten severely and then handed over to the police.
They said that the police interrogated the accused but registered a case against five accused, including two policemen, and released the other three after they were declared ‘not involved’.
Red-handed A member of the bus-stand staff said that during the last week, several passengers had complained about pickpockets operating at the bus terminal, following which the terminal administration had been keeping an eye on suspicious people. He said that on Saturday night, a staff member named Muhammad Abbas observed eight suspicious people, including three uniformed policemen, and informed his other colleagues and some passengers. “The accused started roaming around a passenger, as if they had marked him. The staff and other passengers caught the eight men just after they tried to pick the passenger’s pocket, beat them and called the police, which took them away,” he said. The sources said that the policemen belonged to Garden Town Police Station.
Saddar SP However, Chuhng Police Station Duty Officer Muhammad Ashraf told Daily Times the police had registered a case (Case No. 652) against five people, including two policemen, on the complaint of Abbas. He said that the arrested were members of an organised gang, headed by Constables Shabbir Hussain Shah and Qamar. He said that it was revealed during interrogation that the arrested had stolen Rs 550,000 from a passenger at the bus terminal on Wednesday.
Concerning the release of three people, Ashraf said, “Only Saddar Division Superintendent of Police (SP) Faisal Ali Raja can answer this question because he personally interrogated all the arrested men.”
He said that Chuhng Police had registered the case on the directions of the SP. SP Faisal Ali Raja could not be reached. However, the SP’s guard who received the SP’s cellular phone said, “The SP is in a meeting with the SP (Investigation).” The operator at the office of the Investigation SP said, “There is no light and the Saddar SP has ordered him that he did not want to talk to the media.”
