Karachi: Teenaged bandit spills the beans
KARACHI: Bilal, 18, was arrested on August 3, by the PIB Colony Police Station after a brief encounter near Askari Park (Old Sabzi Mandi). His accomplice Zubair, 30, was killed in the encounter while the leader of the gang, Atif, survived and fled from the New Town Police. Bilal on the other hand was placed in jail custody on August 11.
The case was later shifted to the Special Investigation Cell. The Cell–East will submit the challan of the accused bandit in front of District Judge, West on Wednesday (today). Earlier, the court permitted the cell to keep the accused in remand for five days.
“Only a student,” ASI Choudhary Javed—the investigation officer on the case—told The News, “Bilal had made contact with the bandits during his Secondary School examinations.” Ironically, Saleem, the father of the accused, is a Head Bailiff at the Central Court and is attending the court proceedings. Bilal told the cell that his examination centre was in Lyari and he used to hang out at the Naimat Kadha Hotel during his exams where he met his accomplices. Revealing the details of his accomplices, Bilal told the cell that Zubair was the son of the owner of the hotel and Atif also lived in the same area. The group had robbed twice before in the area of Lyari.
According to the ASI Javed, Atif alias Jabesh 302, was also nominated in various crimes and actively participated in the Lyari gang war. On the day of the robbery, the town police said that two constables of the station, namely Allah Rakhio, and Arshad along with head constable, Sharif, were patrolling the main University Road, when they heard noises from Masha Allah Hotel, situated in front of the Askari Park. When the patrolling team arrived at the scene they saw three armed young men ready to escape on a motorcycle. The team explains that the three robbers had been mugging citizens on gun point, looting cell phones, cash and other valuables. They had also shot someone.
According to the police, bandits opened fire on the patrolling team and attempted to escape. However, the team retaliated, which killed one bandit and left another injured, while one of them fled from the scene. Later, Bilal identified the robbers.
Shahrukh Memon, one of the victims of the armed robbery told the police that the bandits murdered his cousin Ghulam Mustafa when he resisted. Habib-ur-Rehman, another relative of Memon was also shot and injured by the robbers during the incident.
Memon, resident of the House No. 945, Shahdatpur, Zila Sanghar, Tandoadam, lodged FIR No156/2008 under sections 397, 394, 353, 324/34 at the PIB Colony Police station. The case was then submitted to the special investigation cell. The PIB Colony police have also recovered two TT pistols from the crime scene.
The three cousins, says Memon, were visiting Karachi and unfortunately were in the wrong place at the wrong time because they had gone to the hotel for dinner. Memon added that Mustafa received two bullet wounds in his skull and expired on the spot while the firing also injured Hanif. However, Hanif, who was at a local hospital for medical treatment, went to his native town without informing the police, ASI Javed said.
Javed also said that Memon was also not cooperative as he did not turn up to record further statements. Bilal on the other hand is in a critical condition and cannot be interrogated properly, added Javed.
