Karachi: Jewelry gang busted
KARACHI: Police arrested seven professional robbers allegedly affiliated with the Mohajir Qaumi Movement–Haqiqi (MQM–H) on Friday. Hamid Piya, Zaheem, Naeem, Zafar, Haider Ali, Mohammad Ejaz and Tauqeer Siddiqui were arrested while allegedly plotting another robbery. The police claim to have recovered a Kalashnikov, a repeater, a 9mm pistol, four TT pistols and around 500 grams of gold from their possession.
“This group has robbed many jewelry shops in different areas of Karachi, including Gulistan-e-Johar, Malir, Shah Faisal and Gulshan-e-Iqbal, along with various areas of Lahore,” said East Zone SSP Investigation Abdul Khaliq Sheikh, adding that the group consists of around 20 men.
Talking to Daily Times, Aziz Bhatti DSP Hafeez Junejo claimed that the arrested men are affiliated with the Mohajir Qaumi Movement–Haqiqi (MQM–H) Afaq Ahmed group and are also accused of the murder of their party leader, Sharif Khan, in Lahore. “Basically, they saw Sharif Khan as the reason for the party’s instability and, therefore, killed him,” said Junejo.
Junejo added that the men were apprehended while planning to loot a person who was withdrawing around Rs 3.5 million rupees from a bank in Landhi. “They mostly targeted jewelry shops, acting on tip-offs by other jewelry storeowners. The shopkeepers were accomplices in the crimes and purchased the stolen gold,” said DSP Junejo, adding that the group used the money for purchasing weapons, personal expenses and party funding.
“It is my aim to recover all the loot and return it to its rightful owners,” said Junejo, adding that Hamid Piya, who was the mastermind of the group, along with Zaheem and Haider, was arrested from Shanti Nagar, Aziz Bhatti.
The DSP cited an incident when the group targeted a jewelry shop in a local shopping hub in Gulistan-e-Johar. The robbery turned out to be a major tragedy for Nadeem, the owner of the store, as Nadeem’s brother was killed in an accident upon receiving the news of the robbery. “He was trying to turn his car around to get to the store and a speeding crushed his car. Moreover, Nadeem’s father got a paralysis attack upon receiving the news of the robbery and his son’s death,” said Junejo.
The arrested men are residents of different areas of the city, including Gulshan–e–Iqbal, Malir, Gulistan–e-Johar, Orangi Town and Shah Faisal Colony.
