Karachi: Missing engineer arrested for corruption cases
KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued a notice on Monday to the State for September 22 in the case of a missing engineer, earlier arrested for alleged corruption, attempted murder and murder. The bench, comprising Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Bin Yamin, was hearing a constitutional petition filed by Rehmat, the mother of the detained engineer Habibur Rehman. Rehmat maintains that her son was performing his duty as a superintending engineer of the highways division and was overseeing the construction of the road from JalojoChunro to Khokhropar. Reliance Ltd., the constructors, alleged that there were financial irregularities, including the misuse of Rs 62 million.
According to the petitioner, her son first allegedly recovered the excess amount from the contracting firm but was later booked for attempted murder by the Qasimabad police in Hyderabad and then for murder by the Mauripur police. He was acquitted by the courts concerned but then booked in a third case of blind murder at Mehmoodabad Police Station.
A few days after his arrest in this third case, he went missing, Rehmat maintains. She prayed the court to order that her son be produced before the court, to direct officials to disclose the number of cases against him and to release him as he is innocent.
