Lahore: Illegally detained man to get Rs 75,000
LAHORE: Justice Hafiz Tariq Nasim of the Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered on Wednesday a sub–inspector (SI) and an investigation officer (IO) to pay Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000, respectively, to a man they had illegally detained. The judge also ordered departmental action against both policemen and warned them of proceedings before a sessions judge if they did not pay the fine to Mazhar Bashir, the man they had detained.
Petitioner Azmat Bashir had complained to the court that Nawankot CIA SI Badar Munir and Chuhng Police Station investigation incharge Muhammad Aslam had detained his brother, Mazhar Bashir. He said that his brother was not nominated in any criminal case.
A court bailiff recovered Mazhar, who told the court that he had been tortured in police custody. He said that the policemen had taken him in illegal custody because his brother, who was wanted in an FIR, was at large.
The judge observed that the police could not detain or harass anyone related to a wanted person. When the judge asked the two policemen why they had kept a citizen in illegal custody, they denied that they had committed any crime.
