Lahore: Robber cuts jugular vein of youth
LAHORE: Crime is still on the rise in the provincial capital, which is evident from another gruesome incident in which a merciless robber cut the jugular vein of a young citizen and killed him at the spot near Lakshami Chowk in Qilla Gujjar Singh police limits on Friday. The local shopkeepers immediately intervened and captured the killer after a brief chase, who was later identified as Muhammad Kashif, resident of Bibi Pak Damin area.
The angry shopkeepers were so much furious over the incident that they gave a good thrash to the robber at the spot and tried to set him ablaze. Police officials, who had also reached the spot, however, rescued the robber being badly beaten by the people and took him to the police station, an eyewitness said.
The incident of a young’s murder in broad daylight and one of the most populous areas of the city- Lakhsami Chowk– triggered fear among the locals when they witnessed this horrible killing just over an issue of Rs 1,000.
The deceased identified as Muhammad Asad, 18, was an employee at a Karmanwhala hardware shop situated at Bedon Road and he was resident of Baghbanpura.
On the day of incident, the victim left his Karmanwala Hardware shop to arrange change of Rs 1,000 from the market and as soon as he reached near Lakshami Chowk, an outlaw who was also on foot intercepted him.
A shopkeeper Muhammad Rashid told this scribe that the assailant put a knife on the jugular vein of the victim and asked him to hand over all the valuables without resistance. He said after getting no response, the robber himself searched his rival’s pockets and deprived him of that very note of Rs 1,000.
As soon as the victim tried to resist, the robber who had already put the knife on jugular vein of Asad and cut his vein within no minutes. The shopkeeper said that the robber finished his operation so hurriedly that it gave no time to any passerby or local shopkeepers to rescue the youth from the clutches of the ‘bloody’ robber.
He and other shopkeepers, however, rushed to the spot when they witnessed the victim youth lying on the road with a deep cut on his throat and managed to capture the assailant after a brief chase when he was fleeing from the spot on foot, he said.
Another eyewitness, owner of a cigarette shop, said though he could see only the youth falling on the road and crying by putting his one hand on his jugular vein and meanwhile witnessed another youngster fleeing from the spot with a knife in his right hand.
He immediately left his shop and started chase of the fleeing robber. Meanwhile, other shopkeepers also joined him and ultimately they managed to capture the robber, he said, adding some other shopkeepers took the injured to the Mayo Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead due to excessive leakage of blood.
He said that some furious local shopkeepers and residents wanted to burn the dacoit alive but the police immediately intervened and took the assailant to the police station.
Superintendent Police Civil Lines Division Sohail Sukhera said that police have arrested the robber and recovered a knife from his possession. A case has been registered against him on the complaint of victim’s father, Muhammad Arshad, the SP said, adding that investigations were underway to collect information about the involvement of the arrested criminal in other such street crime incidents.
