Lahore: 512 gangs busted in 2008
LAHORE: Police claimed to have smashed 512 criminal gangs and arrested 1,703 members and recovered RS 623.1 million worth looted property during the first eight months of 2008. According to a handout issued on Sunday, as many as 12,762 court absconders and proclaimed offenders were arrested during this period in a drive launched on the direction of Capital City Police Officer Muhammad Pervez Rathore. The police claimed the arrested 1,703 gangsters confessed to 4,736 cases including 13 cases of dacoity cum murder, 22 of murder, 58 of dacoity, 1,443 of robbery and 1,893 other cases.
The police arrested 7,102 proclaimed offenders out of which 378 were involved in murder cases, 298 in attempted murder, 120 in dacoity, 390 in robbery, 627 in burglary and 5,289 in other crimes. During the campaign against illegal weapons, 7,053 cases were registered and 7,075 accused were arrested. The police also arrested 5,700 drug pushers and seized 31 kilograms heroin, 2,177 kilograms charas, 42 kilograms opium and 44,170 bottles of liquor. The police arrested 2,494 gamblers and seized over Rs 5.1 million stake money. Moreover, CCPO Muhammad Pervez Rathore has said that the police have to perform their duty with more dedication to eradicate crime from society, which was not possible without public cooperation.
He said that peace and harmony would be ensured during the holy month of Ramazan and suspicious people around the places of worship should be watched. The members of Masjid Committees should also check any activity by suspicious elements along with the police officials during Juma prayers to avoid any untoward incident, he added.
