Haripur: Tehsil nazim, 4 others charged with MPA murder
HARIPUR: The slain Awami National Party legislator in the NWFP Assembly and former Provincial Minister Akhtar Nawaz Khan was laid to rest in Khalabat Township graveyard Thursday evening. NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti, Speaker Hidayatullah Chagarmati, Senior Minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour, Information Minister Mian Iftikhar, Minister for Zakat Nimroz Khan, Minister for Higher Education Qazi Asad, former chief minister and MNA Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan, former speaker of National Assembly Gohar Ayub Khan, former minister of state for finance Omar Ayub Khan, MPAs Qalandar Khan Lodhi, Barrister Javed Iqbal, Aurangzeb Khan Nalotha, Inayatullah Khan Jadoon, Raja Fisal Zaman and a large number of his supporters attended the funeral amid a tight security.
Meanwhile, the Khalabat Township Police registered a case against the Haripur Tehsil Nazim Iftikhar Ahmed Khan, his father, a brother and two relatives on the complaint of Mushtaq Ali Khan, the brother-in-law of Akhtar Nawaz Khan.
The complainant stated he was accompanying Akhtar Nawaz Khan and his gunman constable Aurangzeb in a motorcar after attending a funeral when Tehsil Nazim Iftikhar Ahmed Khan, Asad Javed and Imran Akhtar, who were travelling by a motor car (PSB 4444) allegedly opened fire on them, injuring Akhtar Nawaz Khan and his gunman seriously.
The complainant also accused Zulfiqar Ahmed Khan Advocate, the younger brother of the tehsil nazim and their father Haji Muhammad Ashraf of abetment in the crime. The police registered a criminal case against Iftikhar Ahmed Khan and his four relatives under sections 6/7 of Anti–Terrorists Act, 302, 324, 353, 34, 109 and 120/B of the PPC vide FIR No 344 dated September 10. The police claimed to have arrested one of nominated accused namely Asad Javed along with another unknown person but Iftikhar Ahmed Khan and another co–accused were still at large.
Akhtar Nawaz Khan started his career as local councillor and served as chairman of the Municipal Committee of Khalabat Township from 1987 to 1991. He contested general elections of 1993 and 1997 but lost to the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz’s Pir Sabir Shah twice but continued his forward thrust and got elected as nazim of UC Khalabat in the year 2000.
He vacated the UC nazim seat to participate the general election of 2002 from PF 51 Haripur III as independent candidate and won the seat defeating PML–N ticket holder Sardar Mushtaq Khan.
Akhtar secured 28,143 votes and joined the Jamiat Ulema-e– Pakistan Noorani Group and was given the ministerial slot in the cabinet of Akram Khan Durrani. He served as minister for transport and fisheries till December 2007. In the election 2008, he again returned successful by bagging 40,492 votes and got distinction of securing highest number of votes in the NWFP.
