Lahore: Hospital doctors ‘kidnap’ female NGO worker
LAHORE: A group of house job doctors of the Mayo Hospital kidnapped and locked a female NGO worker in a room of pediatric department for not responding to the mobile phone ‘SMS’ and calls of a male doctor who had a crush on her. They harassed and threatened her of dire consequences if she complained to police or the hospital administration. The doctors later snatched her cash, purse, and personal documents besides a costly digital camera. The incident triggered fear and insecurity among other lady doctors of the hospital.
The female social worker was later rescued by the local police, which immediately intervened on her emergency call and shifted her to a safe place while the doctors managed to escape from the spot.
A hospital source said the hospital management and the assailant doctors were putting pressure on the lady worker and her family to withdraw her application, which she had lodged in the local police station against the doctors.
It has been learnt reliably that the incident of keeping the lady worker in illegal custody and issuing life threats took place after she repeatedly ignored some vulgar mobile messages sent on her cell phone by a doctor Mohsan Khalid.
The said doctor also allegedly made calls on her cell phone for not responding to his SMS and getting no response from her, the doctor got infuriated and planned to give a lesson to the ‘arrogant’ lady.
In her application, the victim NGO worker told the police that she was discharging her duty as Social Mobiliser Officer (SMO) in the Pakistan Anti-TB Association, District Lahore. On the day of incident she was making arrangements for workshop in the pediatric department of the Mayo Hospital when Dr Mohsin Khalid who used to send SMS on her cell phone turned out there. He again sent vulgar messages on her cell phone and when she gave no response to his messages, he started making calls on her mobile phone.
“As soon as I left the workshop, Dr Mohsin got furious, intercepted her and treated her with abusive language. On agitating, he misbehaved with her in the presence of scores of other doctors and the visitors”, she stated. He immediately called his fellow doctors who took her forcibly in a room of the pediatric department and locked the door. When she tried to escape, they threatened her of dire consequences, she further stated in her application. On her help call, the police reached the spot and rescued her, she said, adding that the doctors wanted to destroy her future.
When contacted Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Zafar Ikram, said the matter was brought to his knowledge and he had constituted an inquiry committee headed by Additional Medical Superintendent (AMS) Dr Zulfiqar Ahmad.
He said that further action would be taken in the light of the inquiry report.
But the Gulwalmandi police said that no action had been taken against the assailant doctors as some efforts at reconciliation between the both parties are underway.
