Lahore: Death sentence confirmed
LAHORE: A division bench of the Lahore High Court comprising Justice Tariq Shamim and Justice Hasnat Ahmad Khan confirmed death sentence awarded to Mohammad Akhtar of Depalpur for killing Riaz Ahmad. The convict had killed the latter after he slapped him for blowing a whistle while passing in front of the home of the deceased is sister. The bench accepted the appeal of Akhtar’s brother, Muhammad Asghar, and acquitted him from murder charges. Okara district and sessions judge on December 13, 2002 awarded death sentence to Akhtar and life imprisonment to Asghar. Both brothers were also fined Rs 100,000 each.
According to the prosecution, Akhtar on September 10, 2001 at noon passed in front of the house of the deceased’s sister while whistling.
Riaz admonished him and then both had a scuffle and the deceased slapped Akhtar, who (Akhter) left after threatening the deceased.
Soon, Akhtar and his brother, Asghar, armed with guns approached Riaz and shot him dead besides injuring his sister.
