Lahore: 992 reports of sexual abuse in Jan-Jun, 2008
LAHORE: At least 992 children below the age of 18, including 304 and 688 female, were sexually abused between January and June 2008 across the country, putting the child sexual abuse rate in Pakistan at approximately 5.4 children a day. According to data presented by the Sahil Referral Unit, of the 2,114 abusers, the vast majority (1,431) were acquaintances of the children abused. The remaining 683 included 96 neighbors, 33 relatives and 29 landlords.
Presenting the figures under a heading of ‘Cruel Numbers’, the Sahil Referral Unit claimed that most of the cases were reported in Punjab, with 518 female and 147 males. In Sindh, there were 130 male and 128 female; in NWFP, there were nine males and 10 females; in Balochistan, there were seven cases of child abuse; and in Azad Jammu and Kashmir five cases of child abuse were reported. Sahil collected these figures from 15 national and regional newspapers. Speaking on the occasion, Sahil Unit Co–ordinator Iftikhar Mubarik said the numbers were only the rough estimate of the cases.
