Karachi: Court grants physical remand of Khanani, Kalia
KARACHI: Judicial and Sessions Magistrate (South) on Friday, granted physical remand of accused Munaf Kalia and Javed Khanani, allegedly involved in financial scam, to FIA Karachi until November 26. The accused, allegedly involved in transferring more than Rs38 billion aboard through ‘Hawala’ and ‘Hundi’, were presented in the court of Judicial Magistrate, Asif Ahmad, where Asmat Mehdi appeared before the court on behalf of FIA and requested a 14–day remand of Kalia and Khanani. The court allowed the accused to be handed over to FIA till November 26 and directed the FIA to submit complete documents of the case in next hearing.
The second FIR filed against Munaf Kalia and Javed Khanani imposed additional charges on them under Pakistan Panel Code.
Earlier, the accused were flown to Karachi on Thursday night by a special flight from Lahore.
According to the FIA officials, Sarmad Awan and Barrister Kameel Shirazi have been appointed for assisting Asmat Mehdi, the special public prosecutor in the financial scandal.
It is worthy of mention here that FIA had arrested the accused directors of Khanani and Kalia International (KKI), the largest foreign exchange company in Pakistan, on charges of money laundering and illegal transfer for billions of dollars.
They were involved in ‘physical’ transfer of foreign currency from Pakistan and also ran an illegal Hawala or Hundi business.
According to FIA officials, Lahore, Gujranwala, Karachi and Peshawar are the main cities where several money changers were running the Hundi and Hawala business and anyone could send any amount anywhere in the world without any check.
Meanwhile, a division bench of Sindh High Court comprising on Justice Khilji Arif Hussein and Dr Qamaruddin Bohra adjourned the hearing of the missing case of Usama Waheed till today (November 22).
The court conducted the hearing on the petition filled Usama’s brother, Ajmal Waheed, in which he made respondent to the concerned ministries and authorities submitting that Law Enforcement Agency (LEA) kidnapped Usama when he was returning home from Cantt Station Karachi and never produced him before any court.
