Karachi: Newly-converted Muslim girl raped
KARACHI: A young girl, S, who recently accepted Islam, was gang–raped in front of her younger sister T on Saturday by the supposed guardians from whom she sought help obtaining legal permission to live in a shelter home, claimed the police. Quoting the two girls, Ferozabad Investigating Officer (IO) Sajjad Ali said that they were Christians and came from Gujranwala to Karachi on November 17 to convert to Islam. S’s decision was influenced by a positive impression of the religious environment in the school where she was teaching. They both decided to convert but they feared for their lives and did not tell their parents or relatives anything. They saved Rs 10,000 and left their hometown, for Karachi, Ali said. In Multan they met Rafiq, a resident of Korangi No 6, Karachi. “They did not know anything about Rafiq but he seemed reliable to them so they asked him to arrange tickets to Karachi,” said Ali. “They had not told him their story till they reached Karachi.”
At the Karachi railway station, when Rafiq heard their story, he invited them to spend the night at his home and the next day, they all went to Iftah Masjid, Binori Town, where the two girls embraced Islam.
The girls asked Rafiq to arrange for place in a shelter home for them. “Rafiq took them to the city court, introduced them to two lawyers and briefed the lawyers of their case,” said the IO.
“The lawyers filed a petition seeking legal permission for the girls to live in a shelter home but it was rejected,” he added. “They then made poor excuses to take the girls home.” This is where they raped S repeatedly, taking turns, alleged the police. One of the two lawyers then left for home, while the other took a bath. Meanwhile T called Rafiq and told him what happened and where they were.
Rafiq informed the police and the Ferozabad police recovered the girls, arresting both men and recovering toys, equipment and bottles of liquor from the lawyer’s apartment, Ali told Daily Times. FIR 1203/08 under sections 376 and 365B was registered.
Medical checkups at the Civil Hospital, Karachi suggest that T is a virgin while S is not. “The circumstances indicate that the lawyers raped S,” Medico Lego Officer (MLO) Dr Farida told Daily Times. “It is not enough that there is no mark of violence on the girl’s body, so clothes and other samples were sent for chemical examination, which will take 10 to 15 days.”
On the contrary, the two lawyers denied all such claims and said that it is a conspiracy on the girls’ and Rafiq’s part and they are unaware of the reason for it. “We filed another petition seeking shelter in the home,” said one of the lawyers. “I think the magistrate was not satisfied so he rejected the application. The girls then requested me to allow them to stay at my home till they were allowed access to the shelter home.”
As part of the investigations, Rafiq will also be interrogated, Ali said.
