Lahore: LHC sets aside life term of 13 accused
LAHORE: A division bench of the Lahore High Court on Monday sets aside life imprisonment of 13 accused who were sentenced on the charges of kidnapping for ransom. The bench freed the accused, observing that there was no cogent evidence against them which could prove their crime. According to the prosecution, Javed, Afzal, Maqsooda Bibi and others had kidnapped Kamal Hameed, owner of the Kamal Steel Mills, and demanded Rs 200 million for his release. Later, the accused freed Kamal on receiving Rs 25 million from his family. The Ichhra police had arrested the accused. Anti–Terrorism Court had awarded life imprisonment to them.
The accused in their appeals had pleaded that the judge of the trial court convicted them without having any concrete evidence against them. They said that the real culprit fled the country while the police arrested them just to show their efficiency.
