Lahore: 3 dacoits killed; ex-major strangled
LAHORE: Police killed three dacoits who strangled a retired major after taking his family hostage for more than 12 hours in EME Society on Tuesday. Former major Rana Abdul Samad, 54, was a resident of Numaishabad, Chuhng, and he owned a kiln in the area while the three dacoits were identified as Ikram and Yasir of Gujranwala and Bhajar of Sargodha. Police sources claimed that the three people were involved in a number of cases like kidnap for ransom. The police and locals of EME Society told The News that at around 9pm on Monday, a person called Dr Aqib Hafeez, a resident of EME Society, who is a paediatrician at Akhtar Saeed Hospital in the society, for checkup of his children. The doctor told the caller he had left the hospital for home and would check the patient on Tuesday. After sometime, two motorcyslists came to Dr Aqib’s house for treatment of their children. When the doctor asked about the children, they said they did not bring them because of chilly weather. In the meantime, a third person came there, took the doctor inside his house and whipped out a sophisticated weapon.
The other two persons followed him and took the doctor, his mother, and a servant hostage and demanded cash and valuables. After collecting cash and valuables from them, the dacoits asked the doctor to call Maj (r) Abdul Samad to his house saying that they (the dacoits) had a target of taking Rs10 million from the ex–major as ransom.
The doctor told them that he did not have his phone number as he (doctor) had only purchased the house from him (major). The dacoits kept the doctor and his mother hostage at gunpoint, tied the servant up and insisted on calling Abdul Samad to the house. On Tuesday morning at around 7:45 am, the doctor managed to call Abdul Samad to his home. The former major had just arrived there when the doctor came out along with two dacoits to receive him. Security personnel standing outside the house asked about the suspected persons and started quizzing them.
The doctor told the security personnel that the suspected persons were his guests. At the same time he hinted what was happening. Samad started quarreling with the dacoits who took him to the house while the doctor, his mother and servant managed to escape and took refuge at the neighbouring house. The neighbours called out the police while the security personnel of EME Society also gathered at the scene.
Heavy contingent of police along with Elite Force arrived and ordered the dacoits to surrender. The dacoits opened firing on the police and a shootout began.
Police commandoes stormed the house and killed the three dacoits on the spot. The police found Maj (r) Abdul Samad strangled. SSP Operations Chaudhry Shafiq Ahmad, SP Sadar Mansoor ul Haq Rana, SP CIA Umar Virk and DSP Imtiaz Bhalli also visited the spot and collected evidence.
The police seized weapons and cell phones from the scene. The bodies were removed for autopsy., DSP Imtiaz Bhalli told this scribe that the three dacoits were history-sheeters and they belonged to Gujranwala and Sargodha. He said that the dacoits had demanded a huge amount from the former major and killed him on refusal. When asked how did the dacoits enter the society, the DSP replied that it was yet to be ascertained.
