Karachi: Arms smuggler held, weapons recovered
KARACHI: In an early morning operation, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) police arrested one of the main suppliers of weapons to outlaws and the operatives of defunct political and religious parties, and seized a huge quantity of weapons. According to the details given at a press conference, CID SP Fayyaz Khan said that CID Investigation SSP Muhammad Aslam Khan received a tip-off that an inter-provincial gang was going to smuggle a huge consignment of arms after having successfully smuggled one consignment earlier. Khan said that a police party led by Aslam Khan started snap checking people between Machhar Colony and Quetta Town in the Sohrab Goth area.
Around 4:30 am on Wednesday, a car with number plate ABW-164 tried to sneak past the police at Sohrab Goth when it was directed to stop. The occupants of the car instead of stopping, opened fire on the policemen and tried to escape. After an exchange of fire, the police managed to arrest Jamshed Khan Bajori, a notorious arms supplier and confiscated a sizeable number of weapons. However, his two accomplices managed to flee from the scene.
The police recovered 8 Kalashnikovs, 7 rifles, 5 shotguns, and 11 pistols besides hundreds of bullets form Bajori’s possession. Khan added that the preliminary investigation revealed that the weapon suppliers had been supplying weapons to different political and religious parties besides bandits. “The smugglers had used various modes to transport arms that included hiring inter-city buses long-route coaches and over the last four years they have smuggled more than 700 weapons.” Khan said that further investigation is underway while stating that CID’s DIGP Javed Ali Shah Bukhari had directed the department to take action as number of reports regarding the smuggling of weapons increased in the city during the last couple of months. He said that the CID has arrested a dozen culprits from different parts of the city and seized weapons.
In a separate operation, on the directives of Korangi SSP Athar Rasheed Butt, the police raided various localities to nab the culprits involved in street crimes and other illegal activities in Korangi Industrial Area.
