Karachi: Rs 4.45m gone in 600-second bank heist
KARACHI: It was payday on Wednesday for four armed bandits who walked out of a private bank near the Bait–ul–Mukkarram Mosque on University Road with a staggering Rs 4.45 million in hand. However, the police managed to thwart another bank robbery bid in the Metroville area, killing one of the robbers and arresting two. In the first incident, the bank near Univeristy Road was only recently inaugurated and suffered a loss of a little over four million rupees after four bandits entered the bank, snatched guns from the armed security guards and held everyone hostage. The swift gang managed to collect nearly four and a half million rupees from the cashiers and fled within ten minutes. During that time they also managed to get away with cassettes from the security cameras installed at the bank premises.
The police said that the culprits were well prepared and knew where the security guards stood and where the CCTV cameras were installed. They also knew the exact location of the server room, which is where all the camera recordings are saved in an automatic system throughout the day.
The robbers entered the bank at around 9:15 am and it seemed like they did not face any resistance from the guards, bank employees or customers. The police added that the robbers fled away in their own golden coloured car, bearing the registration number AKG–057. On behalf of Aamir Sultan, the bank branch manager, the police lodged an FIR No 23/09.
Following the incident, the police stated that they carried out snap checking throughout the city to nab the bandits.
In the second incident, the SITE police on Wednesday arrested two of three armed criminals that were planning to rob a private bank in the Metroville area. One of the bandits was shot dead after a brief encounter with the police. The remaining two were arrested and an investigation is underway. Police also recovered three TT pistols from their possession.
Sources said that after being tipped off, a police team lead by SPO Rao Iqbal reached the Metroville area where the three armed robbers were planning to rob a bank located near the last stop of N-4 bus route.
The bandits opened fire when they saw the police van approaching and in the ensuing exchange of fire, one of the criminals identified as Bismillah Khan was shot dead while the other two named Bakht Sher and Khayal Muhammad were arrested. It is said that the culprits belong to the Frontier Colony.
