Nowshera: Gunmen kidnap religious scholar
NOWSHERA: Unidentified gunmen Friday kidnapped a prominent religious scholar, Pir Hafiz Rafeeullah, from his family abode in Akbarpura prompting dozens of residents to block the Grand Trunk Road near Taro Jabba for several hours. Pir Adnan, son of Pir Rafeeullah, told The News that his father was preparing for Friday prayers when a group of armed men riding in four vehicles stormed the house. “They forcibly picked up my father and bundled him into one of the double cabins and drove away,” he said, adding that a rocket launcher was also fitted to a vehicle.
Adnan said his father had nothing to do with politics and was a religious scholar. He also questioned the role of police deployed at Akbarpura Chowk and argued that they could have challenged the abductors.
However, a large number of people wielding sticks gathered soon after it was announced from different mosques through loudspeakers that Pir Rafeeullah had been kidnapped. Majority of the protesters suspected that a religious outfit operative in Khyber Agency was behind the kidnapping of Pir Rafeeullah.
The protesters blocked GT Road near Taro Jabba for more than four hours. A contingent of police reached the scene to restore the traffic on the road.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Nisar Hussain and Nazim Mian Jehanzeb negotiated with the protesters for three hours to convince them open the road. The police officer and nazim assured the protesters of recovery of Pir Rafeeullah in 48 hours after which the protesters dispersed peacefully.
