Lahore: LHC reduces man’s death sentence to imprisonment
LAHORE: A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC), consisting of Justice Tariq Shamim and Justice Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry, has reduced the death sentence of one Muhammad Nawaz to imprisonment. Nawaz was accused of killing Ghulam Qadir under his tractor and he had already completed the term of his imprisonment in jail. The bench directed the petitioner to pay Rs 269,176 as diyat (compensation) to the legal heirs of the deceased in three installments within a year.
Earlier, an additional sessions judge in Samundari had sentenced Nawaz to death on March 24, 2003 for killing Ghulam Qadir. According to the complainant, Saeed Ahmad, he was working with his father Ghulam Qadir in their fields when Nawaz came there and they had hot words with him over a petty issue. He said the accused attempted to kill him (the complainant) under his tractor, but he escaped unhurt. However, he said, his father was run over by the tractor and the accused fled from the scene.
