Lahore: 5 acquitted of murder
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Saturday acquitted five convicts of murder charges. Shakargarh additional sessions judge had sentenced Muhammad Saleem to death and had awarded 25 years rigorous imprisonment each to Nazir Hussain, Muhammad Iqbal, Gulzar Ahmad and Muhammad Akram alias Akki. According to the prosecution, the convicts entered Akram’s house on April 27, 2001, for robbery and killed him when he resisted them.
They also killed Akram’s sister, Ruqayya, when she tried to save her brother. The bench, comprising Justice Tariq Shamim and Justice Kazim Ali Malik, held that the occurrence was un-witnessed and the first information report was registered after almost nine hours of the incident, and as such the prosecution had failed to prove the case. The bench set aside the sentence and acquitted them of the charges.
