Karachi: CID busts cop-led gang
KARACHI: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Sindh have busted a network of six bandits and rounded up four of them, including the ring–leader, who is a police constable. Arms and other looted items were recovered from their possession. The accused men were involved in looting foreigners, including guests of City Nazim Mustafa Kamal who had come from the United States. SSP Mohammad Aslam Khan of the CID Sindh said they had received several complaints regarding looting of foreigners.
In this regard, he had directed DSP Asif Usman to bust the network. The DSP, along with his staff, started investigating cases registered at various police station including looting of two US nationals who were Kamal’s guests.
During the course of the investigation, a spy volunteered information that the gang seemed to be roaming Sharea Faisal in a white Toyota Corolla. A police team of the CID immediately rushed to the place and located the car at the Natha Khan Bridge. Four suspects were sitting in the car, while two accompanied them on motorcycles as “back-up”.
The police signalled them to stop. On seeing the police the bandits opened fire, which was retaliated by the police. After a brief encounter Khalid Ameer, Saleem Khan alias Cheecu, Zaref Khan and Adnan were arrested, with a recovery of four TT pistols. Their companions on motorcycles fled under cover of fire.
SSP Khan said that Khalid Ameer is a police constable, posted at Shah Faisal Colony police station and ring leader of the gang. During investigation the accused confessed to looting Kamal’s American guests. The bandits were wanted by the Ferozeabad, Sharea Faisal, Shah Faisal Colony, Bahadurabad and other police stations of the city.
The held suspects revealed that they had established their gang last year and their motive was just to rob foreigners along Sharea Faisal.
The bandits narrated that on August 23, 2008, they saw two foreigners (guests of Kamal’s) coming in the car of a private hotel. Two local citizens were sitting with them in the vehicle which was travelling along Sharea Faisal. They had spotted them at the Natha Khan Bridge, chased them, robbed them at gunpoint, and sped away. The items robbed include two laptops, dollars and pounds worth millions, five cell phones, other luggage, and ATM and credit cards.
The Sharea Faisal and Shah Faisal Colony SHOs were suspended following these discoveries. The bandits further confessed that two days after this robbery they committed another robbery in Shah Faisal Colony in the Colony Gate area. In the incident they robbed a cab in which the family of a PIA officer was sitting. They bandits made off with medicine worth Rs180,000, 13 cell phones, jewellery worth Rs175,000, US dollars, passports and other items.
Three days after this incident, they committed another robbery at Sharea Faisal near the Nursery signal overhead bridge. They robbed a relative of an Airport Security Force officer coming from Dubai of Dhs2,700, PKR18,000, cell phones, and half-a-kilogramme of gold, and fled.
