Islamabad protestors hit UN team
Dawn News reported that things went from bad to worse in Islamabad on Friday when the protesters demonstrating against the hike in public transport fares attacked the vehicle of UN inspection team probing into the murder of Late Benazir Bhutto.
Following the incident, the UN team returned to the airport in Islamabad and requested for security from the United States’ embassy, sources told Dawn News.
The demonstrators have been burning tires and damaged public property since Thursday following a whopping increase in the transport fares in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Traffic was also disrupted on Islamabad’s Murree Road, as protesters blocked the Faizabad area.
Meanwhile, police and Rangers took positions in Faizabad and police resorted to aerial firing and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
Rawalpindi police was also requested for assistance as Islamabad police ran short of tear gas shells, police source said.[google-map]
