UN count of IDPs reaches 1.2 million
PESHAWAR: The number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from North West Frontier Province (NWFP) has gone past 1.2 million, a United Nations report said Wednesday.
The News reported that a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) said the number of IDPs grew by 30,000 during one week as the registration of uprooted persons from Orakzai and Kurram agencies continued in Hangu and Kohat districts.
The report further stated the number of registered IDPs has recorded an upsurge during the last one week. But repatriation did not take place.
The rise in displacement was caused by military operations in South Waziristan, Mohmand and Khyber agencies and the continuing limited army action in Orakzai Agency and Kurram Agency.
Residents of Orakzai and Kurram still continue to leave homes. The report said 200 families from upper Kurram arrived at the humanitarian hubs in Kohat every day but did not have access to registration.[google-map]
