Razzaq Commando flees 4-hr police encounter in Karachi
KARACHI: Police and Rangers took part in a joint crackdown in Mawach Goth area Sunday and exchanged fire with the notorious Razzaq Commando for over four hours but failed to arrest him as the criminal managed to flee the scene.
Media has reported contradicting reports as Daily Times claimed that the operation ended with no result as Razzaq along with his accomplices managed to flee the scene, while on the other hand, Aaj TV reported that the law enforcers arrested seven suspects from Mawach Goth and recovered weapons from their possession.
In the 2006 operation, that was carried out in the same locality by the Anti-Violent Crime Unit and was led by its chief Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Farooq Awan to recover a kidnap victim from the captivity of Commando’s gang, the police was able to rescue the victim and kill one of Commando’s accomplices. However, they had failed to take Commando into custody.
Four years later, the tip-off that led to a grand operation Sunday could have finally resulted in Commando’s arrest. However, when the gun battle between the Keamari Town police and Commando’s gang began around 3:30pm, the police party faced relentless resistance from the criminals, the Daily Times reported.
Subsequently, extra police contingent from Keamari Town and the police of Baldia and Lyari towns as well as Rangers personnel were called in as backup. Nevertheless, the crossfire that continued until around 7:30pm yielded no satisfactory results.
According to reports, Commando had around 25 to 30 associates against some 150 to 200 personnel of the LEAs. Not only were the law enforcers unsuccessful in capturing Commando and most of his aides, they couldn’t even enter the area until the culprits left the locale.
The suspects are believed to have escaped through the bushes to the Hawkesbay area. Kalakot Station House Officer Malik Saleem was reportedly injured in the encounter.
Aaj TV reported that the area has been cordoned off and all the entry-exist points of the area have been sealed. Police have taken over house of Razzaq Commando, the channel added.
According to SP Naeem Shaikh one of the most wanted criminal, Razzaq Commando along with his aides, was present in the area therefore the law enforcement agencies joined hands for a joint operation in the area to get Razzaq Commando arrested.
