Mirpurkhas: Arrests lead to strike
MIRPURKHAS: According to the Dawn News on Sunday, a strike was observed here on Saturday in protest against the arrest of 12 Ulema who were leading a campaign to oppose a religious sect’s attempt to build a madressah in an area dominated by a rival sect. The dispute between the two religious groups again generated heat in Hirabad on Friday when a group of people, including Ulema, demonstrated against bids to open a madressah in the house in the Hirabad area. The district administration banned gathering of five or more people, taking out rallies and holding public meetings, carrying arms, making objectionable speeches and raising objectionable slogans, distribution of objectionable pamphlets and handbills for seven days in the district. On late Friday night, the Town police lodged an FIR on behalf of state under section 324, 147, 148, 149, 341, 353 and 188, PPC, against Haroon Muawia, Attaullah Shaikh, Hashim Shaikh, Nadeem Mota, Hafiz Akbar Rashid, Sagheer Karnalvi, Riaz, Arif Faisal, Moulana Arshad, Zaheer Karnalvi, Ehtishamul Haq, Shah Fahad, Amjad Yousuf Zai and some unidentified people. According to FIR, some accused armed with TT pistols asked policemen deployed outside Masjid Baitul Mukarram near Old Bakra Piri to leave the area and issued threats to them. People were instigated through loudspeakers (of mosques) to gather for taking action against policemen. In the morning Moulana Haroon Muawia, Mufti Sagheer Ahmed, Moulana Zaheer Ahmed, Hafiz Faisal Arif, Amjad, Mufti Maqbool Ahmed and six others were arrested by police in different raids and taken to undisclosed places, according to the Ulema Action Committee. A protest meeting was organised by the action committee in Madina Masjid. After Zohar prayers, a procession was taken out. The participants raised slogans against the Mirpurkhas DPO and the City SPO, accusing them of having become a party in the dispute. Moulana Hafeezur Rehman Faiz demanded release of the arrested Ulema and threatened and called for a strike on Sunday if they were not freed till then. The residents of the Hirabad area are living in perpetual fear due to the dispute that had earlier led to an incident of firing in which a woman was killed and some other people were injured.
