Bajaur: Levies man shot down, others bruised by ‘Uninvited guests’
KHAR: According to the Dawn News on Tuesday, unidentified persons killed a Levies official and injured two others at a checkpost in Barang tehsil of Bajaur tribal region on Sunday night. Locals said a group of about eight men knocked at the gate of the Levies post in a comparatively peaceful tehsil Barang at midnight. The Levies guards opened the gate and served them with food according to tribal traditions. However, at about 2am when the ‘uninvited guests’ were about to leave, they picked up the Kalashnikovs of security personnel and opened indiscriminate firing on the Levies men. As a result an official identified as Omar Hayat was killed and two others — Hawaldar Omar Shah and sepoy Sarfarz — were wounded, they said. Eight Levies men were manning the post, however, the rest of the security personnel took refuge in another room. The attackers managed to escape unhurt. The Levies personnel, present on the occasion, said the attackers seemed liked residents of Dir or Swat. The political administration cordoned off the area and started search operation. Several suspected persons were arrested during the swoop. The local people have decided to start patrolling in the area. They said that strangers would not be offered a stay at their houses. Meanwhile, the political administration has extended the Sept 20 deadline, set for to Mandal tribe to take action against militants in their areas, for one week. In this regard a jirga of religious scholars and elders of Mandal tribe was held at Khar on Monday. The jirga was also attended by Assistant Political Agent Iqbal Khattak. The APA told the jirga that government had finalised arrangements to launch a decisive operation against militants to restore peace in the area. He asked the tribal people to take action against the militants in accordance with tribal tradition if they wanted to avoid the military operation. The tribal jirga assured the administration of full cooperation. They said peace committees were being made to start patrolling in the region.
