Karachi: Life imprisonment for 2 drug trafficker
KARACHI: According to the Dawn News on Friday, a special court for Control of Narcotic Substances (CNS) sentenced on Thursday two drug peddlers to life imprisonment. The court found Shah Syed and Murad Saadullah guilty of possessing 70 kilograms of hashish. The judge of the special CNS court-II, Nuzhat Ara Alvi, who conducted the trial, pronounced the judgment after recording statements of witnesses and final arguments from both sides. The convicts were also fined Rs1 million each and in case of non-payment they would undergo an additional two-year imprisonment. The judge also ruled that the convicts were entitled for the benefit of period they spent in prison as under-trial prisoners as provided under Section 382-B of criminal procedure code. According to the prosecution, acting on a tip-off, a police intercepted a bus within the remit of the Baghdadi police station on March 29, 2006 and arrested the accused and seized 70 kilogrammes of hashish from their possession. A case was registered against the accused under Section 6/9-C of the Control of Narcotic Substances Act, 1997, at the Baghdadi police station. The accused were produced before the court in custody on Thursday and after the pronouncement of order the judge sent them back to prison along with the conviction warrants to serve out the remainder of their sentence.
